You've polished a product brochure, added a demo video and an inquiry form, and sent it to a promising prospect. Then comes the reply: "The video doesn't play, and I can't submit the form." Learning **how to make an interactive PDF** means preventing that moment. You'll need to know where each interaction lives, which viewer can run it, and what your reader gets if it's downloaded.

## What an Interactive PDF Is and Why It Matters

Say your sales team emails a **24-page brochure**, a prospect opens it on a phone, and the demo video link does nothing. That's the gap between designing an interaction and delivering one.

A PDF is a fixed-layout document built to look the same across software, hardware, and operating systems. **Interactive PDFs** add behavior to those pages: hyperlinks, embedded video, fillable forms, bookmarks, and sometimes scripts. Think of a printed brochure with a tear-out reply card and a small screen glued to the page. The reply card works only if it's attached. The screen plays only if the reader's device can run it.

Readers usually mean three different things by the same term:

- **The file itself:** interactions are built inside the PDF and travel with it.
- **The downloadable original:** the copy a reader saves, forwards, or archives.
- **The hosted publication:** a **web-based interactive publication** made from that PDF, with an online viewer layer on top.

Each viewer applies the core standard differently, so the same file can behave differently in Acrobat, a browser, or a phone app.

> An interactive PDF is only as interactive as the application that opens it.

Decide which of the three you're building before you choose a tool. That single decision determines what you embed, what you host, and what you must test.

## Which Interactions Survive Download and Where They Break

The practical question is simple: after a reader downloads your file, what still works? In Acrobat, links are added through **Edit PDF \> Link \> Add/Edit Web or Document Link**, video through **Tools \> Rich Media \> Add Video**, and form controls through **Tools \> Prepare Form**, according to [Adobe's guide to making an interactive PDF](https://www.adobe.com/au/acrobat/resources/how-to-make-interactive-pdf.html). Those elements live in the document. Hosted navigation, pop-ups, and online forms live in the viewer layer instead.

### Interactive Features by Where They Are Viewed

| Feature | Acrobat (downloaded PDF) | Other apps and browsers | Hosted web publication | Survives download? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Web links | Yes | Usually yes | Yes | Yes |
| Internal links and bookmarks | Yes | Mostly yes | Yes | Yes |
| Embedded video | Yes if inserted in the file | Some apps block playback | Yes, through the player | Often not |
| Fillable forms | Yes | Fields may not submit | Yes | Only if built into the PDF |
| Pop-ups and overlays | Limited | Limited | Yes | No |
| JavaScript actions | Only with scripts enabled | Often disabled | Only on supported platforms | Only with scripts enabled |
| Hosted navigation menu | Bookmarks only | Bookmarks only | Yes | No |

**Web links and bookmarks** are stored in the file, so they usually survive. Video and forms depend on both construction and viewer. Pop-ups and hosted menus belong to the online layer, so downloading removes them.

JavaScript explains many silent failures. Some viewers disable scripts by default or ask permission first. A submit button can work in Acrobat and do nothing in a phone reader that displays the fields but never runs the submit action.

> If an interaction exists only in the hosted version, the downloaded file is a different product.

Send the hosted link when full interaction matters. Send the PDF as a fallback with plain-text contact details printed on the page. Before distribution, open that downloaded file in at least two applications, including one your audience uses on mobile.

## Building Interactions Inside the PDF in Acrobat

Start with the source file, because structure decides whether anyone can use your interactions. A form field nobody can reach by keyboard isn't interactive in any useful sense.

### Prepare the File First

1. **Confirm the PDF is tagged:** Check logical reading order, document language metadata, alt text for informative images, and descriptive bookmarks. This structure lets readers move through content in the intended sequence.
2. **Add links with clear text:** Use **Edit PDF \> Link \> Add/Edit Web or Document Link**. Write "Read the technical specifications," not "Click here," so the destination makes sense outside its sentence.

### Add Video and the Form

1. **Insert the demonstration video:** Use **Tools \> Rich Media \> Add Video**, add captions to the video file, then play it in the viewers your audience uses. Don't assume successful playback in Acrobat proves it'll play elsewhere.
2. **Build the inquiry form:** Use **Tools \> Prepare Form** to add text fields, checkboxes, and a submit button. Give every field a visible label, write required markers into the label text, add format validation for email and date fields, and set tab order to follow the page.
3. **Test like a reader:** Open the finished file in Acrobat and one other viewer. Fill every field, follow every link, play the video, and submit a test entry.

Menu names vary by Acrobat version, so verify each path in your installed version. Interactions built this way travel with the file. That's what separates them from additions that exist only after you upload the PDF to a hosted platform.

## Planning Interactions Around Reader Tasks

Start with what the reader is trying to do, not with the features your tool offers. Joomag recommends **links, videos, forms, pop-ups, and navigation** as enhancements to an uploaded PDF, and its help documentation frames forms as tools for lead and feedback capture, as described in [Joomag's guide to creating an interactive annual report](https://blog.joomag.com/how-to-create-an-interactive-annual-report?hsLang=en). Useful options, but each one needs a job.

### Reader Task, Interaction and Measurement for a Product Brochure

| Reader task | Interaction | Useful measurement | Skip it when |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Understand how the product works | Demonstration video on the intro page | Plays, completion rate, drop-off point | The same step is already shown clearly in a static diagram on that spread |
| Check technical fit | Link button to specifications | Link clicks, clicks per session | The full specification table already fits on the same page |
| Ask for follow-up | Inquiry form beside the call to action | Form starts, completions, qualified submissions | No offer or next step is attached to the form |
| Find a section quickly | Contents page with links | Navigation clicks, page path | The brochure is four pages or fewer |

Judge the video by **completion rate and drop-off point**, not plays alone. Many starts with an early exit usually mean the opening doesn't answer the reader's question fast enough. Judge the form by starts against completions. A wide gap often points to too many fields or a field readers can't answer yet.

Keep **one primary call to action per spread**. Don't place a pop-up on every page just because you can. Before launch, confirm your platform reports each measurement in the table. If it can't, pick a signal it can report rather than guessing later.

Remove any interaction whose absence wouldn't change what the reader can do. It's decoration, and decoration adds loading time, testing work, and new ways to fail.

## How to Build a Product Brochure in Joomag

Start with the PDF your team already has, then decide which parts need to work only in the hosted version. Joomag's [Creative Studio for designing and adapting content](https://www.joomag.com/en/product/online-editor) lets users import PDFs, add interactive elements, and adapt content for mobile. Before uploading, check your Joomag account for current file-size and page limits, and confirm which media formats it accepts.

### Build the Hosted Version

1. **Prepare the source PDF:** Embed fonts, use one consistent page size, and check that pages read in order. Keep text and images clear of the trim so they are less likely to be clipped during rendering.
2. **Upload the PDF:** Confirm every page rendered, then spot-check dense tables and small type. Check current file and page limits before adding media.
3. **Add the demonstration video:** Place it on the product-introduction page using a format the editor accepts. Check playback on a phone and make sure the video does not cover essential text.
4. **Link to specifications:** Add a button labeled “Read the full technical specifications” and point it to the live specification page. Confirm the destination opens and describes the same product version as the brochure.
5. **Add an inquiry form:** Place it beside the call to action. Keep the fields focused on what the reader needs to provide, such as name, company, work email, product interest, and timeline. Send a test submission through the form and confirm it reaches the intended inbox or system.
6. **Add linked contents:** Connect each contents entry to its section. Check that every link lands on the correct page.

### Preview, Compare, and Publish

1. **Preview on desktop and phone:** Check tap targets, video controls, form visibility, and page order. Make sure the primary action on each spread is easy to find without zooming.
2. **Download and inspect the PDF:** Open it in two apps and check which interactions still work. Additions made to the hosted version do not automatically become part of the source PDF, so test links, video, and forms separately.
3. **Publish and log a baseline:** Record the measures from your planning table: video completion rate, specification-link clicks, and form starts and completions. Confirm the platform reports each one before sharing the brochure.

The sequence stays the same even if editor labels or accepted formats change: prepare, upload, add interactions, preview, compare the download, then publish. That comparison helps set clear expectations: a hosted brochure may include media and interactive features that are absent from the file readers download.

### Make the Content Comfortable to Read on Mobile

Interactive buttons and videos improve what readers can do, but a fixed-layout page may still require zooming on a phone. [Joomag’s AI article studio](https://www.joomag.com/en/product/article-studio) can turn articles from your PDF into responsive HTML pages, giving readers a mobile-friendly alternative while retaining the original designed publication.

Review the converted text, images, headings, and links before publishing. Article View also supports screen readers, keyboard navigation, and adjustable text sizes, helping your team provide a more [accessible reading experience](https://www.joomag.com/en/product/accessibility-mode).

Once the publication is live, use Joomag’s reader analytics to understand which pages and links attract attention. You can also ask [Joomag’s AI Agent](https://www.joomag.com/en/product/joomag-ai-agent) questions about publication performance in plain language and generate reports to guide future updates.

## Forms That Collect Clean Data Without Frustrating Readers

A good inquiry form does two jobs at once. It gives readers an easy next step and stops bad data before it reaches your CRM. The [W3C's PDF techniques for WCAG](https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/pdf) map required fields to the form-field dictionary's **/Ff entry** and recommend communicating required status in the field label, not through color alone.

Keep the form to **three to five fields**. Use a descriptive submit label such as "Send my request," give the button a tooltip, and make its action available from the keyboard. For web-based capture, our [data capture forms](https://www.joomag.com/en/solutions/digital-publishing-solutions/data-capture-forms) give you another route when form handling must work in a browser.

- **Validate formats at entry:** Check email addresses, dates, postal codes, and qualification fields, then show a text alert explaining how to correct the value.
- **Catch incomplete entries early:** Required-field flags reduce cleanup and help route qualified submissions to the right owner.
- **Collect only routing data:** Don't ask for sensitive personal information in a PDF, and state how you'll use responses.

Forms remain fragile across viewers. JavaScript support, security settings, and submission handling aren't consistent, so Acrobat success doesn't guarantee phone success. Provide an equivalent web form or print a clear email address beside the PDF form.

Test deliberately. Enter a bad value in every field, submit from each viewer, and confirm the receiving system records the valid test. Every field must earn its place by helping you respond, qualify, or route the request.

## Testing Mobile, Captions, Keyboard Access and Loading

These checks aren't polish. They're part of whether the interaction works. Adobe's guidance treats field interaction as something to test directly, while [Adobe's accessibility features for PDFs](https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/accessibility-features-pdfs.html) point to fillable fields rather than boxes merely drawn on a page.

Our [mobile reading experience](https://www.joomag.com/en/solutions/digital-publishing-solutions/mobile-reading-experience) is relevant when your hosted version must work well on phones, but you still need to test your own file and audience devices.

![](https://cdnimg.co/8a55554b-9a74-48ea-b33c-00eaf369ca03/d2384039-0410-44b9-a3b2-3af76cdc2f14/interactive-pdfs-testing-checklist.jpg)

### Run Four Separate Checks

**Mobile** comes first. Test the hosted publication in a phone browser and the downloaded PDF in the apps your audience uses. Buttons should be easy to tap, video should play inline, form fields should stay visible when the keyboard opens, and zoomed pages should remain readable.

**Captions** carry the video message without sound. Compare the caption file against the script for names, product terms, and numbers. Don't publish captions you haven't read.

**Keyboard access** exposes broken order quickly. Tab through every link, button, navigation item, and field. Focus should be visible, movement should follow the page, and the submit action should work without a mouse. Add a screen-reader pass for complex layouts, because automated checks can't confirm that reading order makes sense.

**Loading** decides whether readers wait or leave. Test on a throttled connection, note when the page becomes usable, and time the video start. If a heavy video blocks the opening page, compress it or link to it instead.

### Launch Checklist

- **Mobile:** Hosted and downloaded versions tested on a real phone.
- **Captions:** Accurate captions present on every video.
- **Keyboard:** All controls reachable, visible, and operable in logical order.
- **Loading:** Pages usable and media responsive on a slower connection.
- **Fallback:** Clear static alternative when a feature isn't supported.

If any item fails, fix it before launch. Readers won't file a bug report. They'll stop reading.

## Decide Which Version to Publish

Your distribution risk and reader task determine the right version. There's no single format that wins every situation.

### Match the Version to the Situation

**Low-risk material that must travel as a file** needs restraint. Event handouts and emailed specifications should use a PDF with tested links and either a working embedded form or printed contact fallback. Keep scripts and heavy media out unless you've tested them in your recipients' viewers.

**Material that needs video, navigation, pop-ups, and measurement** belongs in a hosted publication. Product brochures, sales proposals, and prospect reports work best when the hosted link is the primary experience and the PDF is the tested fallback. Joomag's Creative Studio lets users design, import PDFs, add interactive elements, and adapt content for mobile. Digital Content on Joomag can include PDF files, SVG and SWF files, video and audio files, images and photos, and fonts, as well as materials created with its online editing tools Crater Editor and Enhancer.

**Confidential material** needs control, not more features. Client-specific proposals and internal financial documents belong in a controlled, authenticated viewer. Avoid scripts where possible, limit external connections, and treat every downloaded copy as one you can't recall.

Pick your situation first. Then run the checklist in two viewers, publish the version that passed, and label the other clearly as a fallback rather than pretending both offer the same experience.
